Lately, we are realizing that having a 4 year old is the first introduction to "parenting" in contrast to caregiving. Oliver is an independent thinker and a fairly serious little boy. Yet at times he is silly, playful and innocent. He also has his share of irrational fears and worries, which sometimes surprise us given his rational nature. He does not like being the center of attention, but he does connect one on one with his friends and teaches in a genuinely caring way. At home, his world revolves around playing, building and reading. He is a lover and a cuddler. His myrtle turtle is a true friend and source of comfort to him. And he is generous with his affection for his mom and dad. He will often rub my back while sitting next to me and randomly tell me how much he loves me. The other day he cupped my chin and gently gave me a kiss on the nose.
Today, we were reading a book about dinosaurs. It was talking about the different climates they lived in. I said if I was a dinosaur, I'd have liked to live in a warm climate, not too hot or too cold. Then I asked what climate he would prefer. His response without pause, "well, I would be happy living wherever you are, mommy."
I know someday he will want to live as far from me as possible, but there will never be a day in my life that I will not love this sweet boy.
